Wanna be a victim?

E.T

Just a little background on my thoughts for this song.  If you've been reading my hubs for a while you know about my experiences with sexual violence.  As a result I take issue with a lot of songs I hear on the radio, but E.T. by Katy Perry and Kanye West definitely takes the cake.

I wasn't going to say anything (except to my husband who hears all my radical opinions) but I was listening to the Top 40 by Ryan Seacrest show this morning and I heard that this song was #1 on the charts and I was very troubled.

For those of you who are not familiar with the song, here are they lyrics as found on http://www.metrolyrics.com/et-lyrics-kanye-west.html

[Kanye West]
I got a dirty mind
I got filthy ways
I'm tryna Bathe my ape in your Milky Way
I'm a legend, I'm irreverent
I be reverend
I be so fa-a-ar up, we don't give a f-f-f-f-ck
Welcome to the danger zone
Step into the fantasy
You are not invited to the other side of sanity
They calling me an alien
A big headed astronaut
Maybe it's because your boy Yeezy get ass a lot

[Katy Perry]
You're so hypnotizing
Could you be the devil
Could you be an angel

Your touch magnetizing
Feels like I am floating
Leaves my body glowing

They say be afraid
You're not like the others
Futuristic lover
Different DNA
They don't understand you

Your from a whole other world
A different dimension
You open my eyes
And I'm ready to go
Lead me into the light

Kiss me, ki-ki-kiss me
Infect me with your love and
Fill me with your poison

Take me, ta-ta-take me
Wanna be a victim
Ready for abduction

Boy, you're an alien
Your touch so foreign
It's supernatural
Extraterrestrial

Your so supersonic
Wanna feel your powers
Stun me with your lasers
Your kiss is cosmic
Every move is magic

Your from a whole other world
A different dimension
You open my eyes
And I'm ready to go
Lead me into the light

Kiss me, ki-ki-kiss me
Infect me with your love and
Fill me with your poison

Take me, ta-ta-take me
Wanna be a victim
Ready for abduction

Boy, you're an alien
Your touch so foreign
It's supernatural
Extraterrestrial

[Kanye West]
I know a bar out in Mars
Where they driving spaceships instead of cars
Cop a Prada spacesuit about the stars
Getting stupid ass straight out the jar
Pockets on Shrek, Rockets on deck
Tell me what's next, alien sex
I'mma disrobe you, than I'mma probe you
See I abducted you, so I tell ya what to do
I tell ya what to do, what to do, what to do

[Katy Perry]
Kiss me, ki-ki-kiss me
Infect me with your love and
Fill me with your poison

Take me, ta-ta-take me
Wanna be a victim
Ready for abduction

Boy, you're an alien
Your touch so foreign
It's supernatural
Extraterrestrial

Extraterrestrial
Extraterrestrial

Boy, you're an alien
Your touch so foreign
It's supernatural
Extraterrestrial

Fill me with your poison

In the chorus to this song Katy Perry begs "Kiss me, infect me with your love and fill me with your poison."  She then tells us she want to be a victim and she's ready for abduction.

Far be it from me to say that people shouldn't be into rape fantasy.  Really, whatever you want sexually is none of my business.  It becomes my business (and everyone else's too) when you're telling teen girls (as that is Katy Perry's market) that wanting to be raped is awesome and exciting.  Being raped is "extraterrestrial."

I got a dirty mind

Okay, staying away from Kanye West's inability to form complete sentences is going on the sidelines for now. He starts out this song by saying, "I've got a dirty mind, I've got filthy ways."  He continues by saying he's a big headed astronaut.  All I have to say about that is. . . way to be subtle Kanye.

Then toward the middle of the song he says, "See, I abducted you so I tell you what to do."  Ummm, really?  If that's not a way to encourage healthy sexuality, I don't know what is.

The exciting conclusion

As I said in the beginning, if rape fantasy is your thing far be it from me or anybody else to judge you.  What I see as problematic is that two people who market their music directly to young people who are just beginning to discover their sexuality are saying that rape is a good thing.  To go even further, it's out of this world.  You'll never get anything better.

I would call for people to write music about healthy sexuality.  Encourage young people to discover their own sexuality without being influenced toward something they may not want.

In case you want to listen to part of the song
