A fighting musical
Do you like musicals? How about action packed movies? What about comedies? Or are you more of the romantic type? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is the movie for you!
I'm just going to give a brief synopsis of the movie, as well as my impressions of the characters. Overall, it's an amazing and totally bad-ass movie.
The Story
"Scott Pilgrim is dating a high schooler. . . "
Scott Pilgrim is a 22-year old Toronto native. He's in a band, Sex-Bomb-om. He has a 17-year-old Chinese girlfriend who goes to a Catholic high school. Her name is Knives Chau and she's just your typical 17-year-old high school girl. She's involved in the year book club and is very wraped up in the drama. Scott likes her because she's sweet and uncomplicated.
But then the unthinkable happens! Scott starts dreaming about this girl, figures out that she's actually real and starts asking around about her. Her name is Ramona Flowers. She's from America but she moved to Toronto for mysterious reasons. Scott desperately wants to date her, but first he has to defeat her 7 evil exes. Then ensues an epic battle to win Ramona's heart without actually dying in the process.
As in all romantic comedy musicals, Scott prevails and is with Ramona forever.
The Characters
Scott, as I mentioned above, is a 22-year old. He is unemployed, plays the bass in the band. He also does back up vocals for Sex-Bomb-om. By all accounts he's actually fairly un-extrodanary.
The guitar player and vocalist for the band is Steven Stills. He is gainfully employed and has big ideas for his band. He enters the band in the Toronto Battle of the Bands because the prize is a record deal with G-Man Graves (more on him later.)
On drums is Kim Pine. She's a firey red head who has a passion for the drums. She's almost perpetually angry around Scott because he brutally dumped her several years ago and Scott is in denial about his brutality.
The band's groupie is Young Neil. He loves to play video games and eventually replaces Scott as the bass player for Sex-Bomb-om.
For the first 30 minutes of the story, Scott's girlfriend is Knives Chau. She's a 17-year-old Chinese school girl who goes to a Catholic school. She turns into Sex-Bomb-om's most dedicated fan (mostly because she's in love with Scott.) When Scott brutally dumps her, we discover that she had amazing knife fighting skills.
Wallace Wells is Scott's cool gay roomate. Because Scott is unemployed, Wallace vallantly provides Scott with all the necessities of life. He is obsessed with Lucas Lee (who is an evil ex, as it would turn out) and is famous for his ultimatums.
Ramona is a mysterious woman. She's from America and has moved to Toronto because she needs a new location to re-invent herself. Ramona is smart, firey, and extremely independent. She has broken up with every one she's ever been with, which makes all of her exces very bitter and bent on destroying her love life.
G-Man Graves (aka, Gideon Graves) is Ramona's seventh evil ex. He's basically a complete tool with a good head for the music business. He controls Ramona's mind with a chip implated on the back of her head.
The rest of Ramona's exes play a significant part in the story. Mainly because Scott has to fight him all to be able to date Ramona. However, they all have basically the same personality. They're complete egotistical jerks and you are never left wondering why Ramona broke up with them.
The movie vs. the comic
The movie, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World is based on a comic series. It's a series of six comic books, and they are all fantastic. Even more impressive, the movie doesn't actually destroy the books. The dialouge in the movie is almost exactly the same as the dialouge in the comics.
The one critique I have is that the movie does a really poor job of showing the actual amount of time it takes for Scott to defeat all 7 evil exces. In addition, Scott has a much more dynamic personality in the comics. He also has super powers, which is awesome.
Conclusion
The comics have been described as the most epic chronicle of our time. I would say the same for the movie. It's hilarious, serious. . . perfect. I would highly recommend this movie.
